A day @ shelter

Spending a day at a homeless shelter can be a meaningful and eye-opening experience. Homelessness is common, and a day at a homeless shelter would be the best activity to understand the complex issue and an important step in raising awareness and making a positive impact.

I was hesitant and guarded in my interaction with the residents. Soon I realized, it’s the most amazing opportunity to interact with the shelter's residents. I listened to their stories and recent activities, engaged in conversations, and offered empathy and support. I realized that at times, individuals experiencing homelessness just need someone to talk to. I was a compassionate listener, and as some of them were willing, I engaged in conversations about their experiences and challenges.

During the day, I helped the case Manager Mrs Karen to cook and serve the hot meals and helped in the clean up later. As part of my recently concluded drive, Mrs Karen and I distributed hygiene kits, winter essentials kits, socks and other essentials to the residents.

Later, I supported with other tasks as cleaning, organizing, and administrative work. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating to answer all my questions and supported my voluntary activities.

As my mother was driving me back home, we engaged in discussions on my experiences and reflections at the shelter. I was discussing as if I had put on the shoes of the residents and describing their stories and conversations. I was pained by the difficulties they faced, and we had a deep discussion on the structural issues contributing to homelessness. It was a great learning and reiterated my stance that everybody should be treated with respect and dignity.
