Internship experiences

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the front desk of a doctor’s office? Maybe you thought that the front desk workers only answer calls. Or maybe they just work on their computer all day long. Well, front desk workers in any medical office carry out multiple tasks much more difficult than just attending calls. If you want to find out more about what happens and what tasks these front desk workers execute then follow along on my journey working with these front liners.

This day, Dr. Jaju scheduled me to front desks where the appointment schedules, patient calls, and other paperwork are handled. I got to observe, ask questions and shadow several dentists and I tried to support them as much keeping in mind that they have important tasks to finish. While shadowing, I noted how the doctors would converse with parents on the phone, scanning different insurance paperwork, and filing. I even got to call a list of insurance companies! At first, I wasn’t really good at it and I’m pretty sure the insurance companies were really confused on why they were getting so many calls from the same provider, but later on I got the hang of it and ended up calling a lot of insurance companies. During the calls I provided information such as service dates, providers name, and tax identification number and other details. I did not realize that the front office is so busy all through the day. I thought that dentists just work on people’s mouths but didn't realize the multiple tasks each and every staff member has to perform. After my experiences I soon realized there is much more work such as insurance, paperwork, calls, and billing which are involved in practices such as Smile Wonders.

Every day is full of learning new things! Front office tasks were time consuming and tedious but extremely important to run the practice. I was impressed with how efficiently the staff attended calls, took notes, and documented information. I am definitely excited and thrilled and look forward to learning more in my visits.
