Internship experiences

During Covid-19, I always wondered how dentists would conduct annual checkups with their patients during the lockdown? Maybe they had checkups with patients over zoom or over google meets. I found out how technology is bridging the gap between the patients and doctors.

During this visit at Smile Wonders, Dr. Jaju called me into her dental office where she attended to patients through tele visits. Tele visits are online video meetings with the doctors wherein parents can voice their thoughts, and problems they and their children may be facing. Of course, I didn’t get to personally engage in conversations with parents but did get to understand their key concerns and reasons for the tele visits. I heard and saw the children and their parents' discussions. One frequent behavior that I noted was that the infants would start crying uncontrollably as soon as the parents would try to get them to open their mouths. It became difficult for both parents and Dr. Jaju to see and understand the problem.

My days were both interesting and knowledgeable. I found it interesting to watch Dr. Jaju converse with parents and what she notes down in her journal. I was impressed with how the Doctor observed the children's behaviors, and the different diagnosis and surgeries she would recommend to the patients. I was amazed at how the video enabled doctors and patients to discuss the problems almost face to face. How exciting! I am definitely excited and looking forward to my next visit at Smile Wonders.
